Just a block up from lovely Lake Morton is a ramshackle place of business you might think about driving past if you didn’t know better. While Mister Fish may not offer much in the appearance department, it more than makes up for it in the quality of the food.
If you’re one of those people who thinks all fried fish tastes the same, do yourself a favor and give this hole in the wall—a historic mainstay of Lakeland restaurants—a try. You’ll be glad you did.
The Mister Fish sandwich is the centerpiece of the establishment and it’s probably the best place for a newcomer to start. Garnished with mayonnaise, onion, mustard, and a pickle, the sandwich is sure to satisfy even the heartiest appetites. The fish itself is fried in cornmeal, leaving it a delicious golden color. The taste matches the visual. You have several choices when it comes to side dishes, including hush puppies and even fried macaroni and cheese. The puppies are not to be missed, but the mac and cheese bites are the real hero of Mister Fish’s side dish offerings. Bring a friend along just so you can sample both.
Of course, if a heavy sandwich isn’t in your interests, you have plenty of other options on the menu, all of which live up to the Mister Fish name. Try one of their fish boats, which come with unadorned fried fish, fries, and hush puppies. Unlike most Lakeland restaurants, Mister Fish doesn’t really give you a place to sit and enjoy your meal. There’s a small table off to the side of the order window, but it doesn’t offer much of an atmosphere. A far better choice is to take your meal down to the shore of Lake Morton and eat your food while watching the waterfowl. A more pleasant afternoon you will never spend.
